In an update that will shock absolutely no one, it seems that Guerrilla Games is working on a third mainline entry in its popular Horizon series. Yes, really. Try to keep calm.
Earlier today, the developer announced some of its top-level staff are shifting seats, with promotions leading to some new management and the technical director putting his focus on the Decima engine itself. However, one sentence in this update has caught the attention of Horizon fans, which pretty much says "We're making the next one" without properly saying it.
After spotlighting all the people moving up the ranks at Guerrilla, the statement goes on to talk about what comes next: "We have full confidence in our new leadership as they steer Guerrilla towards a bright future," it reads, "expanding the world of Horizon with Aloy's next adventure and our exciting online project."
So, in addition to the online multiplayer game we know is happening but hasn't been officially revealed, we can now say (with even more confidence than before) that Horizon 3 is coming. Hooray!
If these words from the dev aren't enough of a clue, Horizon Forbidden West — game number two in what will become a trilogy — ends with a lot left hanging in the air. No spoilers of course, but the seeds were clearly planted for a third game, which looks to raise the stakes even higher for Aloy and her allies.
Until that new game arrives, we have Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, a DLC expansion that has our heroine exploring the ruins of Los Angeles. If you're playing through this now, take another look at our extensive Horizon Forbidden West guide, which now includes everything you might need regarding Burning Shores.
Are you down for Horizon 3? Try to act surprised in the comments section below.

Not a fan of endless Sequels tbh. Especially since Guerillas output is already quite low
Honestly I'm shocked, flabbergasted and quite possibly bamboozled.
Quite fancy a new Killzone at this point, can't lie
There goes any chance of a new Killzone. Boooooooooooo!
I'd rather have something new TBH. I enjoyed what I played of the first one, but haven't felt like picking up the new one (also didn't finish the first) and would rather see something new now.
loved zero dawn
forbidden west was a big let down
so we've already got 3 horizon games and we can expect 2 more
People complaining after two? Hate to think what say about uncharted with its 6 games and Ratchet and clank with its 17.....
Personally I can't wait to see where they take the series next, maybe they will move away from America, travel the seas by boat visiting islands or maybe to a new continent altogether with a whole host of new machines and tribes.
Also I'm quite looking forward to the new multiplayer game, I'm hoping it's similar to monster hunter which suits it perfectly.
@Magnus_Selene I believe it is supposed to be a trilogy.
And of course it - cannot be that surprising, considering how the second game finished... 😉
Awesome can't wait especially after burning shores can't wait to see Seyka again ^__^❤️❤️❤️. I think what'll happen is they'll end things with this and make it a trilogy then move on to something new it makes sense everyone comes together to fight as one to defeat Nemesis when it arrives it'll get defeated (probably with a few stake raising sacrifices) and then GAIA will be completely salvaged and rebooted earth saved and Aloy rides off into the sunset ending the series
Looks like Pacific Rim is coming. Japan would be great.
Sweet, Elden Ring 2 confirmed!
Polite pass. The first was intriguing and new. The sequel felt bigger and I think that's where I lost interest. I'm somewhere in the middle of the game and have no desire to return to it.
@UltimateOtaku91 Both Uncharted and Ratchet are far shorter experiences. Uncharted 4 was the longest at about 15 hours to complete. Horizon takes about what?.. 30 hours on average and upwards of 100 to get everything done? That's a massive difference from the two as you can potentially fit anywhere from 2 to 6 Uncharted games is a single Horizon game.
I adore this series and I can't wait to see what they cook up for the next one
@Uncharted2007 That was honestly my second biggest issue with Forbidden West, it's just so incredibly bloated with entirely uninspired open-world video game filler bs that it kind of killed my interest. Zero Dawn was a big game, but it never felt like it lost focus and was just spinning its wheels. Forbidden West, for me, was so loaded down with mini-games, endless fetch quests, mario kart style races, crafting material hunts dictated entirely by rng, far too many collectibles, etc., etc., etc that it never found its focus and only ever spun its wheels. I put 90 hours in to it, and I genuinely enjoyed maybe 20 of those.
@UltimateOtaku91 There are some excellent bits in Burning Shores where Seyka holds open something for Aloy to shoot or vice versa. They need to use this in the multiplayer game
Awesome. I'm halfway through Forbidden West and absolutely loving it. It took me a while to pick it up due to the lukewarm reception from a lot of people, maybe that's why I am enjoying it so much. My expectations were lowered.
@trev666 How could it be a let down when it's better in more or less every way compared to the original?
There goes our chance of seeing a new Killzone game then :/
Oh boy, are we getting a new FromSoft game or Metroid Prime 4 then?
First game came out around Breath of the Wild, the second came out around Red Dead Redemption 2. So the third should come out around GTA6 or FF7 2
YES!
Burning Shores is one of those games I wanted to pace myself because afraid I would finish it to quickly
But that went out the window, I'm being a crack head 🤣
Place #3 on the calendar please. Day 1.
That’s great! Aloy has been one of my favorite new characters of the past decade. Really enjoy the Horizon world lore.
@Snake_V5 I’m assuming he’s probably talking about the narrative of the game being a let down, or rather the main quest line’s structure. I feel the same. HZD was a solid start to the franchise, but I thought HFW was sort of boring in its quest structure. The first two thirds of the game was very open world routine, so to speak. After games like Witcher 3, RDR2, and Ghost of Tsushima to use a closer analog, there’s been more interesting ways to approach quest structure for these style of games. HFW was really pretty visually, sure, and the gameplay was superb and, yes, there was a lot of extracurricular content to explore and experience, but the quest structure had not improved as vastly and one could argue that the narrative was certainly lesser than the first game. I know, for me, I got hooked in the second half after struggling to gain interest for the first half of the game, only to be dumbfounded by the very end of the story.
They would have to really work on fixing the shortcomings and expanding the limitations of the first two for Me to get as hyped as I was for Forbidden West. It was safe to a fault and quite honestly with Horizon I just can't get excited about more of the same as I was then. It turns out for me, exactly more of the same is not really appealing as it stands.
Which seems to be my experience with the trend I feel is common with sequel cycles. More of what is great is always welcomed, yet not taking opportunities to Improve in areas where it may be needed is a letdown.
It sometimes feels like these Studios that jump into the one track sequel rut focus on corporately strategized formulaic output so much they forget to listen to valid criticisms or explore any areas for improvement.
@Jaz007 Well, that would be a disservice to those of us who played the first two and are excited since the second game legit ends on a massive cliffhanger.
Forbidden West was a gorgeous and fantastic game with some of the best sidequest writing I've experienced. Can't wait for the story to wrap up in the epic conclusion.
Judging from the other comments, I seem to be in the minority here when I say that I'm very happy about a third main game. I've been playing Burning Shores recently and I don't want it to end!
She's gonna need a bigger quiver...
Maybe this time it won't have terrible launch timing.
I hope the map is smaller. Fw map was overwhelming. Anyone have any prediction on the location of the next game? I'm thinking new York.
@Xaessya “ the second came out around Red Dead Redemption 2”
Lmao. What? You’re talking about a 3 year time gap between red dead redemption 2 release and forbidden west.
@Americansamurai1 not like much smaller but more diverse , i love the 2nd game , but i still haven't finished yet. mostly because there are parts that kind of dragged on , and i keep taking breaks to play something else or from games. the longer the game is , then it takes forever to finish it these days.
Well that's a bit disappointing I really wanted something else like a new IP or Killzone 😕
At the very least I would like a completely new writing staff for part 3! I've enjoyed everything from HFW except the story, characters, dialogue, etc.
Do the games ever tell us where the Quen are from? I'd like to see it take place there. They keep saying "delta" like it's the head of the Nile and they're Egyptian, but that's a long way around to the west coast. I know Assassin's Creed just did an Egypt game but I don't play the AC games so it would be a new locale for me.
But if they are from somewhere else that's fine too, as long as see govt overthrown along w/ the nemesis fight.
My hype for Horizon 3 has plummeted since the death of Lance Reddick. The plot is going to suffer tremendously. Sylens was the best character in the series by far, imo. It was obvious they had big plans for Sylens at the end of HFW and even more with Burning Shores but all that is surely getting removed now. Nothing Guerrilla can do about it, just a tragic loss.
Fine by me. Adored both of Aloys adventures and its dlc. Genuinely looking forward to a third. However I am gonna need some convincing with its online multiplayer version
Not really surprised but I could never really get into the Horizon games. Happy for those who love the games though
It was supposed to be a trilogy from the start. Sad that we no longer have lance reddick
Awesome! Though it helps to know if I have to wait till PS6 is released. Lol.
@Wheatly All the crafting stuff goes into the "open-world cruft" category for me. Things like the crafting, strike mini-game, the racing, and the audio-logs and yadda yadda yadda, all just felt like bloat that had no real purpose other than to pad out playtime and distract from the fact that the game has very little going on narratively.
Let's only hope they'll pick better date to ship it. God knows the marketing team is having the worst luck when it comes to launching their games in particular. 1st overshadowed by Zelda, 2nd by Elden Ring.
If they gonna release Horizon along GTAVI imma die laughing.
I'm interested. Want to see what a next gen only horizon looks like 😁
@UltimateOtaku91
The difference is timespan and the fact that the devs worked on other series in between. We’ve had 3 horizon games with 2 expansions and apparently at least 2 more on the way. I cant speak for Ratchet and Clank I don’t know much about that but in between all of those uncharted games Naughty Dog made two of the most influential games of all time with The Last of Us. It’s clear Guerrilla has the talent I just wish they’d branch out more.
@Deemo37 That's true, in six years they've made two main games, two expansions, a PSVR2 game and are deep in development on their Multiplayer game, which is still double than some of Sony's other studios like Bend, Sucker Punch and Santa Monica. I think after the Multiplayer game they will most likely split into two teams one for the third game and one for something else, maybe a new IP.
@Jaz007
Bought the second one but didn't finish the game, got bored. Played and finished the first one.
As long as it doesn’t take another 6 years to make a sequel I’m happy to get a Horizon 3 just to see how the story shakes out. But after that I do think they should shelve the series for a little it really has this push like it’s a Mass Effect or a Last of Us and it’s really not it’s just a somewhat decent open world game.
@nessisonett It really is remarkable.
Breath of the Wild after the original.
Elden Ring after the sequel.
Now Tears of the Kingdom after Burning Shores.
All roughly around a month after a Horizon game releases.
Guess Elden Ring 2 is confirmed!
@Ralizah I didn’t even connect Burning Shores and Tears of the Kingdom! It really is cursed 😂
@nessisonett I feel like a Horizon and Advance Wars crossover game would probably be just enough to trigger the end of the world for real.
I'm absolutely shocked it took this long 😒 😑 🙄
How is this a surprise to anyone???? 😂😂😂
@puddinggirl no ,itll be on ps5 ,with ps6 owners whinging that its holding their console back 😁
@rjejr Wouldn't "Delta" pretty much guarantee the deep south, MS/TX/LA? Considering it's called that in our "old ones" time? (Though we may be the only "old ones" here )
Snapmaws. That would be the entire game. Just snapmaws everywhere.
@UltimateOtaku91 We still haven't gone to the even-more-savage East coast yet. The text found in the Enduring Victory base in HZD talked about how the East was hit first and hardest, starting with NY, so the ruins of NY could be a much drearier thing than anything the west. With a Horus activated in the DLC, one can imagine just how many of them may be littering the East.
The Horizon 3 DLC can take us to DC. Though that could get boring. Ravagers and Scarabs sound tame compared to the 21st century Old Ones version of the locale.
@Panic_Attache ...Best comment on here 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hopefully Aloy will have had enough time to catch her breath, and she won't sound like she's just run up a load of stairs, whilst trying to sound like Gladys from hi de hi.
Jesus her puffy pant vocal delivery is annoying
I really enjoyed the first game eventually and i have the 2nd but i have not got round to it yet. I'd rather have another killzone and i have to admit i didnt really like the ps4 one..a bit knob that one.
@KingPev The number of bows poor Aloy is lugging around by end of forbidden west is absolutely bonkers. Detracted from the game in my opinion.
I mean I've played the first two so I may aswell stick with it now
Oh boy, can't wait for Aloy to learn that's better to be a team player rather than a lone adventurer for the third time
Personally would prefer a new ip from them....they are talented but I find horizon boring
@Wheatly I actually completely agree with you with Ragnarok as. Well. It's an amazing spectacle for sure. Yet I also found myself just wanting it to be over. It felt poorly paced and I got the same burnout feeling I got with Horizon far before the credits rolled.
I don't know how much more you can do with GOW and I genuinely would love to see the studio take their prowess into a whole new IP.
Same with Naughty DOG, yet I'm not so sure it would be much different for them. Because if you strip away the story and settings and pacing, uncharted and TLOU essentially are just re-skins of near identical gameplay and engine foundstions.
I feel Like those three studios are stuck in a samey sequel assembly line focused on profit and expectation rather than exploring something new and less dated.
I worry that the next Ghost of Tsushima is going to be just like Horizon for me as well....
@Wheatly yah I feel like Sony really put all there Eggs into a very narrow consolidated basket to the extent that we are now I'm in a situation where we wait 5 years or more for these very safe and iterative blockbuster sequels from like 4 studios and that's about it.
Luckily we are in a time where despite first party on both consoles having different kinds of issues, it does feel like I pwrsonally have some interesting 3rd party stuff to look forward too.
I'm not saying everything has been bad from Sony. Yet I do feel if you look at Sony sponsored output from PS2 until now, you see a very narrowed trajectory that really has drained their gsming landscaped of diversity.
Obviously it will be a highly anticipated game for me as Horizon Forbidden West is my current game of the console generation so far, but like the article basically says, this is not a surprise. Always nice to get confirmation though.
To everybody talking like this is a bad thing or they wished they moved on to something else, this was as much of a given as Nintendo making another Zelda game. Not saying this series is quite on that level, but still, it was a given since the series is now one of PlayStation Studios' biggest and the second one ends in a way where a third one was obvious. Sure, they could grow the studio and split it up to make a new IP, but to be mad that they are doing something that is extremely obvious is a bit silly. Whether you like the series or not, it would be pretty crappy if they didn't finish the story.
Sony needs to be careful it doesn't milk it's IP too hard, could end up doing what MS has done with Halo, Gears and Forza
@Landstalker @BigJoze i think with all the new shooters Sony is developing they don’t see Killzone as important and might just get overlooked for the new shooting games in development. Horizon 3 is a safer bet, but of the two i would have more fun with a new Killzone. Horizon after the second one is starting to fatigue me. Might wait on the 3rd.
Afraid i was never very hyped. Tried zero dawn and kind of bounced off the formulaic toy based stealth gameplay. It was a pain to learn and got quite boring getting from A to B and having to deal with it. I prefer more action based combat.
I'm sure some people enjoy it, but i am not one of them.
People want new IPs yet don't want sequels apparently. Horizon isn't even ten years old yet and only had 2 games. Honestly people can't be crying out for new IPs then complain when said IP gets follow ups.
Maybe they'll let you play as a mute Aloy.
Her voice never really bothered me in the first game, but the constant chatter and giving huge clues within 5 seconds of reaching a puzzle area in Forbidden West was really irritating.
well that sucks , aloy is gonna look even- never mind 🤣😂🤣😂
I wonder what game it's going to release alongside? TES 6?
@GreatAuk Sony must think we're stupid because God of War had that same issue.
@Nem yea it’s the 2nd time for me what felt like a chore. As in having played both games I am not particularly down with Horizon whatsoever, I did enjoy some of the scenery though.
Sequels, spandex, & live services oh my!
@UltimateOtaku91 I was thinking the exact thing. It being monster hunter like would fit so good
They need to move on. Absolutely no need for another Horizon game. I would rather watch The One Show than play Horizon 3
@NEStalgia "Wouldn't "Delta" pretty much guarantee the deep south"
Well without spoiling too much I can assure you nobody speaks w/ a redneck hillbilly southern accent. Thankfully.
You're smart, let me know after you play the game in a year or so where they come from. Pretty sure it's not the Mississippi delta tho, but I can see why you might think that.
@rjejr Well they're in California, so, like, does, like Gaia? Like, totes have any, like control? over, like how the, like, populations, like, develop accents? And, like things from the, like cradle? facilities?
@NEStalgia The only "accent" that stands out to me is 1 guy in the dlc w/ the stereotypical lisp voice. I know people talk like that but when they make the guy a wimp and also talk like that, well, not a fan of the caricature. His boyfriend was fine. Now I'm wondering how it would have seemed if those 2 characters switched voices. 🤷♂️
Bring back Killzone . Not a big fan of horizon
@rjejr IDK what it is about Guerilla and Horizon but between the off-screen characters you read about in the first game, several voice-only characters, and all the talk about all this stuff in the sequel, I'm starting to think the human race would have been extinct in their version of 2060 and beyond even without the Faro Plague just through sheer lack of procreation being possible anymore. At least Faro's bots had an interest in reproducing (insert tentacle references here.)
I still need to start playing thru Forbidden West, but nor surprised at all we're getting another sequel.
Hopefully this is the final game in the series though.
I'm noping out of the series from now on, I spent 70+ hours with Aloy on Forbidden West and can officially say apart from Abbey she is the most unlikable character I have ever played in a video game.
Have devs forgotten how to make characters relateable?
@NEStalgia From my many years "studying" Cinemax After Dark one thing I've learned is anyone can get pregnant after 2 beers, so that would never be a problem. 😉
@rjejr LOL. IDK that was a different world. Without internet, upside down culture wars, and without tentacle robots around every corner. Might not be the same in 2060...
@Loamy Damn. Didn't know how to cover it. I deleted it though.
@Uncharted2007
comparing horizon to uncharted is pretty stupid because they are very different styles of games, so I think it's unfair to compare a straight storyline game to an open world game that is supposed to take a long time
@Qazzcap No, what's stupid is replying to my post before reading the comment I was replying to with the comparison.
@HonestHick what are the other shooters Sony are working on?
@BigJoze Bungie has one and the last of us multiplayer i would assume is a shooter, tho not in the sense of a COD or anything. Thought there was a 3rd game but maybe thats just in my head. Sony isn’t known to make shooters so maybe they need more in development. They are for sure losing the marketing rights to COD. Killzone never really took off in a major way, Socom has been dead for decades, Resistance as much as i would love to see it, is probably not happening. So yeah you are right, maybe they really don’t have much outside of whatever Bungie does.
